Japan 3: Lanterns


Lanterns in the old pilgrim city of Ise, Japan, the site of the two most important shrines in the Shinto faith. This is on the road connecting the shrines. Traditionally pilgrims would pay for a lantern so the road is lined with these of all different sizes.

My English guide book informs me that “The area between the shrines was formerly the red light district”. Given that the shrines are several kilometres apart that suggests a lot of pilgrims had more earthly distractions…
